What do Georges Bizet and Gustave Charpentier have in common? Both won the Prix de Rome in the course of their career. It was a highly prestigious prize that guaranteed them four years of peace and luxury at the Villa Medici, surrounded by the beautiful Borghese gardens in Rome, where they could devote themselves entirely to composing.
Many of the Prix de Rome's laureates have gained eternal fame throughout their life. But most of the music composed for the prix de rome has meanwhile been forgotten. That's why the Spanish record label Glossa has launched a CD series dedicated to the Prix de rome. Brussels Philharmonic and French star conductor Hervé Niquet are in charge of the recordings, which are also linked to a series of exclusive concerts.
This year, Palazzetto Bruzane has invited us to perform the Prix de Rome programme in Venice. Ous musicians face a busy weekend: After our opening concert at friday evening, 15th of april in Brussels, they catch the flight to Venice Saturday noon, have one more rehearsal before the concert on sunday afternoon and catch the flight back on monday morning. We will keep you up to date on their whereabouts!
